The Treehouse Times #01: Under Twelve Not Allowed
Page McBrier. Avon Books, $2.5 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-380-75780-0
When 11-year-old Amy induces three friends to start The Treehouse Times newspaper, she thinks it will be a simple project. She will be the editor, Leah will take photographs and Robin and Erin will be the writers. Their first scoop involves a neighborhood store's banning children under 12 because of a shoplifting incident. But the episode isn't as simple as Amy first thinks, and the four girls learn that publishing a newspaper is harder than it appears. The first Treehouse Times story presents believable moral and ethical dilemmas: Is an editor always right? If a person is unkind, does he deserve to have his side of the story heard? As in many series, the characters all are superficially similar, but their very real problems add insight to the story. Ages 8-12. (Oct.)
