Pig, Horse, or Cow, Don't Wake Me Now
Arlene Alda. Doubleday Books for Young Readers, $13.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-385-32032-0
It's rare to find a photograph making a pig look cuddlesome, but Alda clearly possesses the skills to bring out every endearing quality of her animal subjects. In this companion volume to Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, Help Me Fall Asleep, jaunty rhymes and unadorned, close-up images depict an early-morning chain reaction, beginning with the awakening of a peacock, whose call for corn wakes up a pig, whose ""oinks woke up a calf next door/ Who wondered what the noise was for."" The dawn is then greeted by a lamb, duck, horse, cat and, finally, a boy (the last-mentioned, however, is somewhat reluctant). At the breakfast table, the child ""looked at his mom. He was happy, of course.../ Then he ate like a pig and chomped like a horse."" A very happy meshing of verse and visuals. Ages 3-7. (Oct.)
