Beamer Flynn spent the first 10 years of her life in a backwoods commune with her parents and their idealistic friends. Even though the group has been disbanded for some time, Beamer still feels crowded by former members who frequently congregate at the Flynns' Minnesota home. Ultimately, her feeling of claustrophobia and her desire to lead a more private life affect her relationships with others, including boyfriend Andy, a sensitive artist, and newcomer Martin, a flirtatious college student. Although Beamer is quick to criticize the values of the ``aging hippies,'' her deep-rooted affection and loyalty to them eventually come to light. The heroine's unusual background adds a fresh twist to this first novel about love, commitment and the struggle for independence. Minor characters--particularly the clan of middle-aged nonconformists--are colorfully depicted. Ages 12-up. (Apr.)
