Dragons, monsters and giants are favorites of children, and so this collection is sure to please. The carefully selected stories, which range from classic fairy tales to contemporary stories, encompass both the familiar and the less well-known. Included are The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde, The Last of the Dragons by E. Nesbit and Frightening the Monster in Wizard's Hole by Margaret Mahy, to name a few. The lengthier selections, of which there are several, are countered by shorter ones; the extensive use of Spencerley's watercolor illustrations and the thoughtful book design add to the volume's sense of lightheartedness.
