Legend Daisy Flowerdw
Patricia Pendergraft. Philomel Books, $14.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-399-22176-7
Because of her odd appearance and silent manner, Daisy Flowerdew is called a ``freak of nature,'' and for most of her 13 years she has been taunted and shunned by everyone except the grandmother who raised her. After Granny Henry dies, Daisy is sent away from Punkin Center to live with her beautiful young mother, who has recently married the prosperous Mr. Heath. Regarded as a burden in her new home, the girl is treated like a servant. When plans are made to marry her to the despicable Elmer Goots, Daisy admits her despair to no one except the animals of Toby Creek and a magical paper doll, who comes to life and eventually rescues Daisy from her fate. In lively prose sprinkled with irony, Pendergraft ( Miracle at Clement's Pond ; Hear the Wind Blow ) spins an enchanting yarn. Some readers may feel that the elements of fantasy emerge too abruptly, but those who perceive the story as a modern folktale will not be bothered by improbable events and somewhat exaggerated characterizations. As vividly portrayed as Daisy's loneliness is the insensitivity of townspeople unwilling to accept a newcomer who follows the beat of a different drummer. Ages 10-14. (May)
