A Parent's Guide to Childhood Cancer
Lisa J. Bain. Dell Publishing Company, $13.95 (224pp) ISBN 978-0-440-50692-8
Always a terrifying diagnosis, cancer is even more so when it applies to one's child. In this sensitive and accessible guide, part of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia series, science writer Bain offers a calm approach to this difficult topic, providing parents with the information necessary to help them make decisions about their child's treatment, care and well-being. Covering the basics of cancer surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, Bain includes an extensive discussion of bone marrow transplants and charts detailing the side effects of chemotherapy and adjuvant drugs used for pain management. Such new therapies as biologic response modifiers, immunotherapy and monoconal antibodies, are discussed. Chapters consider the family's social and emotional needs, such issues of recovery as returning to school, and death and dying. Although focused closely on practices followed at Philadelphia's Children's Hospital, Bain's guide is an excellent starting point and sourcebook for parents anywhere. A resource section lists national information and support organizations. (July)
