Love Song
Andrew M. Greeley. Warner Books, $18.45 (442pp) ISBN 978-0-446-51455-2
Conor Clarke is an extremely handsome entrepreneur who writes gushing ``love songs,'' or poems. Love Song itself is no less exuberant, but Greeley expects a lot of his readers. They'll be asked to believe that stunning U.S. district attorney Diana Lyons is hopelessly in love with Clarke, in spite of the fact that his father ruined her father's life. Indeed, she has declared that she despises Clarke, whom she's investigating for alleged felonies. But love has addled her wits. Few readers will buy the preposterous plot or the pompous dialogue and narrative. (``And further deponent sayeth not.'') The novel's lone surprise is unveiled late in this overlong yarn. What takes place next will surprise no one. 75,000 first printing; $75,000 ad/promo; author tour. (Jan.)
