The Rhythm of Success: How an Immigrant Produced His Own American Dream
Emilio Estefan. Penguin Books, $24.95 (240pp) ISBN 978-0-451-22642-6
In his inspirational memoir, musician, recording exec and entrepreneur Estafan takes readers through his Cuban childhood, his immigration to the U.S., and his rise from penniless migrant to the top of the music industry in short, lesson-oriented chapters including ""Take Risks and Think Big,"" ""Be Well Accompanied,"" and ""Focus When Disaster Strikes."" Throughout his anecdote-heavy account, Estefan emphasizes the importance of hard work, humility, family, and honesty, with a generous and humble charm that authenticates his hard-earned wisdom. Estafan doesn't have a negative thing to say about anyone, but still comes across as astute, savvy and entirely candid. Though Estefan maintains an inspirational tone, and his solid values (decency, ingenuity, optimism) and common sense advice (""use all the forms of learning at your disposal"") are just as applicable to the workplace as any other area of life, would-be entrepreneurs looking for specific business advice will likely be disappointed.
