What’s Up?

Tabs that pull and swing let readers interact with eight birds in this delightful and stylish small-format book, originally published in France. The casual question of the title defines each encounter: “Hey Mrs. Hen, what’s up?” asks the narrator in one scene. “I’m laying an egg,” she replies. Pulling a vertical tab causes the chicken to rise, revealing an egg underneath, which hatches as readers continue to pull. Elsewhere, flamingos’ wings shift left to right as they dance, a puffin dives for tiny orange fish that scatter, and a peacock’s tail expands dramatically. Bold, contrasting colors make Cosneau’s posterlike graphics jump from the pages—something that a robin actually does in the book’s pop-up finale, launching itself from a branch to take flight.
