World from My Window
Sheila White Samton. Random House Value Publishing, $1.99 (25pp) ISBN 978-0-517-55645-0
An artist whose works include murals in public buildings across the country, Samton makes a debut in children's books with this original and attractive pictorial adventure. Unforced, euphonious verses invite little readers to practice counting from one through 10 as they gaze on glories of the natural world. ""From my window,'' one sees the landscape transformed at twilight in lovely, full-color illustrations that reveal Samton's imaginative use of collage and paint. ``The moon is rising in the sky,/ And two pale clouds are drifting by'' (one moon, two clouds). The rhymes appear on pages facing the illustrations. There are three hills, four streams, etc., and then ``Night closes 'round the world as I/ Countup the stars that dot the sky.'' Thenall figures are present on the last two pages in a dazzling double spread. (36)
