What Happened Today Freddy Gro
Crown, Marvin Glass. Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, $12.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-517-57140-8
From the illustrator of Steven Kroll's Don't Get Me in Trouble! comes a solo effort, the story of Freddy Groundhog. He makes an enemy of Farmer Green with his burrowing, but becomes a hero when he emerges on February 2 and doesn't see his shadow (signifying an early spring). Scenes of Freddy with his family provide some comic relief and warmth, but the text is inept and wooden, a flaw that the design, which sets off words in boxes, exaggerates. Ages 3-7. (Jan.)
