Lawrence
Janet Morgan Stoeke. Dutton Books, $12.95 (24pp) ISBN 978-0-525-44602-6
Readers will surely feel sorry for Lawrence, a frustrated hedgehog who longs for a taste of his favorite dessert: coconut cream pie. But in order to whet his taste buds, he must go to the Grand Cafe, and Lawrence isn't brave enough to venture out of his house. It seems that something scary happens during every visit, and the harried creature ends up snapping himself into a ball and rolling away--before he can finish his dessert. When even familiar household objects begin to resemble pies, Lawrence dons his debonair red bow tie and resolutely sets out for the Grand Cafe. His courage pays off and he devours a huge piece of pie, oblivious to the comical chaos breaking out around him. Shy children who share Lawrence's fears will find a friend in this endearing hedgehog, but even the bravest little ones will enjoy Stoeke's ( Minerva Louise) upbeat tale and her bold, delightfully unaffected illustrations. Ages 3-6. (May)
