A Child's Book of Things
Paul Stickland. Orchard Books (NY), $13.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-531-05906-7
Using gently hued watercolors, Stickland has created a catalogue of familiar objects, geared to exploring a child's world--in this case a home populated by two parents, a girl and her younger brother. Each spread depicts individually labeled items on one side and an illustration showing them in use on the facing page. Identifying the objects and then locating them in the scene provide a challenge for the young end of the age group; for the other end, it is a good way to practice word recognition. Objects are grouped by location within the house, beginning with a child's room that includes a teddy bear, pajamas, mobile and slippers. Stickland's British background is evidenced by the eggcup and toast rack in the kitchen, and an odd-shaped mower outside. But these variations merely add spice to a warm and cozy collection. Ages 2-6. (Aug.)
