Red Light, Green Light
Yumi Heo. Scholastic/Cartwheel, $6.99 (20p) ISBN 978-0-545-74463-8
Using a punchy, pared-down aesthetic that recalls her work in Hey Mr. Choo-choo, Where Are You Going? (2008), Heo gives readers a crash course—no pun intended—about the meanings of nine common road signs. Buoyant, well-crafted rhymes keep the story moving as a car (it looks like a grown-up version of the classic red-and-yellow Little Tikes Cozy Coupe) makes its way through town: “Blinking lights, gates block the lane./ Railroad tracks: Here comes the train!” The meanings of each sign appear behind flaps, adding an interactive dimension to the story, while Heo’s lightly abstracted motorways offer plenty of details to engage children who aren’t keeping their eyes on the road. Ages 3–5. (June)
