Between Us
Jeanne Betancourt. Scholastic, $2.25 (144pp) ISBN 978-0-590-33323-8
Nothing has ever come between Carolyn and Christine Baird, 16-year-old identical twins, until a career seminar takes Chris from school for six weeks to work in a hospital pharmacy. While Chris gets involved with her job, Carolyn drifts further away, into the arms of her new boyfriend Bob. Soon Chris notices that certain events at the hospital don't add up: patients are not responding to reliable painkillers, a pharmacy colleague is especially secretive, and a woman admitted with broken bones dies inexplicably. Suspecting a link between these events and drug problems at her high school, Chris enlists the aid of Carolyn and Bob in unraveling the mystery, renewing the closeness between the sisters. The mystery in this absorbing page-turner is well crafted and smoothly handled, if a little predictable, and the romantic subplots make this a light, quick read. (12-up)
