Koko's Story: Dr. Francine Patterson

Though this is not as touching as Koko's Kitten, the previous story about the gorilla who knows sign language, it will answer a lot of the questions raised by readers of that first book and inspire many to wish for gorillas of their own. Patterson's patience seems endless as she cares for her two unwieldy but lovable ""children.'' It's clear that what began as an exercise in curiosity has turned into full-fledged nurturingshe punishes Koko for her mischief and rejoices in her accomplishments. The photographs add to the friendly atmosphere in which Koko has been raised: they are like any family's candid shots. One disconcerting note appears in an epilogue: Dr. Patterson solicits young readers for contributions to help move Koko and Michael (and Patterson?) to Hawaii. All ages. (February)
