There's One in Every Family
Candice F. Ransom. Scholastic, $2.75 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-590-42977-1
Millicent, a thoroughly likable nine-year-old, is the shining star of this novel, which middle graders will want to read in a single sitting. The book's pace is as energetic as its heroine, who longs to be her parents' favorite child. She sets out to endear herself to her patient father, who is preoccupied with work worries, and to her mother, who is knee-deep in PTA activities. Almost all of Millicent's well-meaning exploits backfire, which will keep youngsters giggling. Yet on several occasions--such as when Millicent saves her favorite tree from being cut down and when she sees her newborn niece for the first time--readers may find tears in their eyes, for this is the kind of old-fashioned family story that genuinely warms the heart. Ages 8-12. (Mar.)
