Cheater, Cheater
Elizabeth Levy. Scholastic, $13.95 (164pp) ISBN 978-0-590-45865-8
Junior high school student Lucy is branded a cheater when, in hopes of impressing the wealthy and popular Joey, she fudges the score at a bowling tournament. Lucy must put her mistake behind her, a task made more challenging when an honestly earned high grade in a difficult science class arouses her classmates' suspicion. Though Lucy's efforts to overcome her foolish maneuver are realistically portrayed, the scene in which arrogant Joey receives his comeuppance is contrived. Additional bits of pat plotting lessen the impact of the novel's intriguing central issue. However, believable dialogue and a likable heroine will give readers plenty to enjoy. Ages 8-12. (Sept.)
