A Very Merry 90s Christmas

J.T. Kelliher, illus. by Alex Fine. Penguin Workshop, $12.99 (40p) ISBN 978-0-593-75320-0

1990s pop-culture fans can take a holiday ride down memory lane in this jam-packed reworking of Clement C. Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Inside a familiar-looking home decked in twinkling lights, a figure whom readers will peg as Full House character Uncle Jesse contemplates his family’s absence due to a delayed flight. A page later, he sends an email from his iMac to neighborhood pal Mrs. Doubtfire, who proclaims, “Help is on the way, dear!” From there, a chain of phone calls invites many more, including the Spice Girls, Michael Jordan, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Alanis Morrisette, who arrive with snacks and toys of the era in tow. Kelliher’s peppy tongue-in-cheek verses and Fine’s crisply lined poster-like portraits offer loads of identifying clues. It’s a throwback celebration that’s as silly as Tickle Me Elmo and cozy as a grunge flannel. Ages 4–8. (Oct.)
