Wow! It Sure Is Good to Be You!
Cynthia Jabar. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), $9.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-618-58132-0
Jabar's (Mommies Are for Counting Stars) rhythmic, rhyming and visually exuberant book functions like a greeting card, as a faraway adult delivers a long-distance pep talk. The opening scenes illustrate how the grown-up (represented in early scenes by hands and a vibrantly printed hat) misses the child: she gazes at the child's photograph, telephones and writes, while the accompanying text reads: ""Somebody, somewhere,/ is thinking about you,/ Keeps your picture/ in their pocket,/ Misses your kisses."" After illustrating numerous other ways the two main characters stay connected, the story culminates in a much-anticipated reunion. Indoor scenes appear against varying wallpaper patterns-pale pink donuts on a lilac backdrop or multi-colored polka dots on peach wash-reflecting the girl's range of moods and activities. Outdoor scenes include images common in girls' drawings: stiff-legged cows, puzzle-shaped clouds and pink hearts-one connected by dots to the grown-up's car, the other connected to the house where the girl waits expectantly. With upbeat slogans on headwear and T-shirts (e.g., ""Girl Power,"" ""You can Do it!"" and ""Girls Rock This World""), and paint rarely staying within the characters' outlines, affection courses palpably through this sparkling, girl-centered love letter. Ages 4-8.
