The Plane
Ray Marshall, Roy Marshall. Viking Children's Books, $13.95 (10pp) ISBN 978-0-670-80695-9
Marshall and Bradley have produced an ingenious pop-up with tabs that approximate an aircraft's flight when the reader moves them. The amazingly intricate instrument panel on a passenger jet leaps to view on the first page, accompanied by clear descriptions of each instrument's function. In the succeeding pages, one finds opportunities to simulate a plane's take-off and learn the causes of pitching, yawing, rolling, etc., and details of how the pilot controls the flight. The illustrations are in lifelike colors throughout the book, which includes a model plane and accessories, with step-by-step directions on assembling the parts as depicted. The job takes about 45 minutes, according to the text, and requires no glue. (All ages)
