Arnie and the Stolen Markers
Nancy Carlson. Viking Children's Books, $11.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-670-81548-7
Arnie has already spent his money at Harvey's Candy and Toy Shop when he spies a fabulous colored-marker set. He can't resist it; while other customers stand at the cash register, he slips out the door with his prize. The fact that he has stolen the markers is bad enough, but when his mother discovers them beneath his mattress, Arnie must confess to Mr. Harvey. His penance is bagging purchases, stocking inventory and washing windows at the store. Carlson addresses a common problem with gentle realism, showing readers that they are always accountable for their actions. After encountering a character as sweetly endearing as Arnie, kids who have contemplated shoplifting might better understand how easy it is for good kids to do the wrong thing. Carlson's pictures, like the bright baubles that tempt Arnie, will lure readers in with bold colors, and nab them with the fun. Ages 3-8. (October)
