Harold MacMillan: 2volume 2: 1957-1986
Sir Alistair Horne. Viking Books, $27.5 (768pp) ISBN 978-0-670-82980-4
British prime minister from 1957 to 1963, Macmillan, who died in 1986 at the age of 92, restored Anglo-American relations after the Suez debacle and played an important role in the Test Ban Treaty of '63. He survived a series of crises that included the collapse of the 1960 Paris summit, the Profumo security scandal and the devastating defeat of his effort to bring Britain into the Common Market. In this concluding volume of the authorized biography, Horne makes liberal use of Macmillan's letters and diaries, which shed new light on his premiership years and provide blunt evaluations of world leaders including Khrushchev, de Gaulle, Adenauer and Kennedy. American readers will find particularly interesting his admiring comments on President Kennedy and their ``very special relationship,'' especially during the Cuban missile crisis, and Macmillan's extensive exchange of letters with Jacqueline Kennedy, most of which are reproduced here.
