Happy Birthday, Lexie

In Eisenberg's ( Leave It to Lexie ) second story about this likable heroine, Lexie is determined to have a unique party for her upcoming 10th birthday. She soon discovers, however, that Shirley Spitzer, an unpopular, overweight classmate, is planning her party for the same date. Then Lexie is upset when her mother pressures her into asking Shirley to have a joint birthday party. But Lexie and the other children really like Shirley once they get to know her, and the dual celebration is a huge success. Lexie realizes that growing up means she must begin to think of other people besides herself. Readers will easily identify with this sensitive story that clearly and concisely addresses family and peer relationships. Ages 8-12. (May)
