How to Be Happier Day by Day
Alan Epstein. Viking Books, $15.95 (384pp) ISBN 978-0-670-84787-7
Epstein, cofounder of an introductions and relationship counseling service called True Partners, has compiled a witty, whimsical list of suggested activities for each day of the year. Some are thought-provoking and profound, others fun and frivolous; each allows the reader to see the mundane and familiar in a new way--the ``mindfulness'' that, Epstein claims, creates a happy life. Some of his proposals ask the reader to do something entirely out of character, such as ``Don't wear your glasses or contacts'' (Oct. 16) or ``Make a fool of yourself'' (Nov. 19). Some are downright silly (``Get dirty,'' Apr. 3), while some require a modicum of soul-searching (``Write down your dreams,'' March 19) or even a bit of risk (``Ask for a raise at work,'' Aug. 31). Whether the reader chooses to act on any of Epstein's suggestions, simply reading this delightful and childlike book should brighten one's day. Author tour. (Jan.)
