In addition to sentimentality, spiritual uplift and the requisite illustrations, the criteria for Christmas books include a simple story in a very short format. This reissue of what was originally a Christmas card fulfills all categories better than most we have seen so far. The story itself is familiar, since it inspired the movie It's A Wonderful Life, which marks the 50th anniversary of its release this year. Though some details are different (the protagonist in this version is named George Pratt rather than George Bailey), the inspirational message is intact and delivered with restraint rather than melodrama. George's recognition of the ways his life has blessed and been blessed by others has true emotional impact. Appropriate period illustrations by Scott McKowen and an illuminating afterword by the author's daughter add dignity to a book that does not dishonor its title. (Nov.)
