Kate Harrison-Weil's life is as glossy as the magazine she publishes. Married to a doctor, Kate has worked her way to the top: creator of the trendy Childstyle , she has it all--almost. Her biological alarm clock is ringing but, at 39, Kate is finding it difficult to conceive. She and her husband, Matt, suffer through months of unsuccessful fertility treatments, until the pressure causes a split in their marriage. Kate moves out of their perfectly elegant East Side penthouse to a walk-up on the West Side, changes jobs--and discovers she's pregnant. Unwilling to return to Matt simply for that reason, she determines to carry on alone. Lucky Kate meets understanding sportscaster Larry Sedlicek, who offers to be her Lamaze coach; unluckily, she finds her new work environment unsympathetic to the constraints of pregnancy. Despite shallow characterizations, Nickles's ( Hype ; Girls in High Places ) plot breezes along until, predictably, Kate finds the true meaning of having it all. (June)
