Broadway: Day & Night
Ken Marsolais. Pocket Books, $50 (288pp) ISBN 978-0-671-74637-7
Along with a broken heart for every light on Broadway (as an old tune has it), there's also a story. Producer Marsolias and AIDS activists McFarlane and Viola here collect tales from those who work in the contemporary New York City theater. The abundant by-lines here are those of the likes of Helen Hayes, Hinton Battle, Joel Grey, Patti LuPone and Harold Prince; there is also an introduction by Angela Lansbury. Arranged in such sections as Audition, Rehearsal and Backstage, there are snippets on life on or behind the stage that are revealing, entertaining and interesting. But the more than 300 photos included are fuzzy and in some cases juxtaposed with inappropriate text. Book royalties will be donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. (Nov.)
