Night Before Christmas-Grandma
Clement Clarke Moore. Random House Books for Young Readers, $15 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-679-81526-6
In this prepossessing volume, a series of paintings completed by Grandma Moses in 1960 accompanies Moore's classic holiday poem. Rustic touches such as a spinning wheel , carved baby cradle and wood-burning stove bring warmth to Moses's otherwise cool winter palette. The snow-covered countryside and frosted evergreens provide the perfect hushed setting for Santa's spirited visit. A rendering of the children sleeping snuggled beneath a patchwork quilt is particularly engaging. Moore's writing--originally a Christmas gift for his children in 1882--still deserves to be celebrated with the entire family. Though illustrated versions of the poem abound, Moses's folk art has a refreshing down-home appeal. All ages. (Oct.)
