Grandpa's Slide Show
Deborah Gould. Lothrop, Lee and Shepard Books, $13.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-688-06972-8
This is a compelling book about death. The high point of Sam's visits to his grandparents is his grandfather's presentation of his vast catalogue of slides. During one of Sam's visits, however, Grandpa is rushed to the hospital, where he dies. After the funeral, Grandma agrees to Sam's request that they have a slide show. The family tradition is continued, although it will never be the same as when Grandpa was there. In a final scene, Sam dreams about Grandpa waving goodbye to him. Gould's uncompromisingly realistic depiction of a death in the family is sensitive and moving. Like Tomie dePaola's Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs, this valuable book could prove cathartic for children who have recently lost a beloved grandparent. Ages 3-8. (September)
