The Retreat
Henry Denker. William Morrow & Company, $18.95 (348pp) ISBN 978-0-688-08306-9
Denker's ( The Choice ) understanding of the heartbreak endured and inflicted by substance abusers distinguishes this timely, absorbing novel about a celebrated entertainer's alcoholism. New York theatrical agent Marvin Morse sagely guides plucky ingenue Katherine Millendorfer to Broadway stardom, but Marvin's love for his gifted client doesn't blind him to her drinking problem. After Katherinenow called Kitzi Millsbecomes pregnant, the romance ends acrimoniously, but Kitzi retains Marvin's professional services while her career soars. When her alcoholism reaches acute proportions, however, Marvin takes her to a California drug rehabilitation clinic. Though Kitzi initially resists the regimentation, humbling chores and group therapy sessions, she is eventually persuaded to confront the long-repressed childhood pain that catalyzed her addiction. Denker deftly interporates the stories of other clinic patients as he spins his involving narrative. In the end, he conveys the earnest message that pernicious substance abuse can be overcome with willpower and courage. (Dec.)
