Emily and the Enchanted Frog
Helen V. Griffith. Greenwillow Books, $12.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-688-08483-7
In a collection of three stories, Griffith confronts a precocious 20th-century child with classic folkloric elements (such as being granted three wishes). In ``Emily and the Enchanted Frog,'' Emily kisses a frog which, as should all enchanted frogs, turns into a handsome prince. But it was the frog that was under a spell, not the prince; it must now remain a prince until the spell is broken. To Emily's chagrin, only she can help change the frog back, and it's not a pleasant task. The second and third story repeat the quirky humor, resulting in a trio of original, amusing tales. Lamb's boldly colored drawings--modernized 19th-century fairy-tale illustrations--enhance the mood of the text. Ages 6-up. (Aug.)
