Flyby: The Interplanetary Odyssey of Voyager 2
Joel Davis. Atheneum Books, $19.95 (237pp) ISBN 978-0-689-11657-5
General readers as well as space buffs should enjoy this graphic behind-the-scenes account of Voyager 2's eight-year ""flyby'' past Jupiter and Saturn then further to Uranus, our Sun's seventh planet, in January 1986. Already a historic spaceprobe, Voyager 2 will make a flyby past Neptune in 1989. Science writer Davis's you-are-there treatment derives from the fact that he was among the reporters at California's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) during the Uranus flyby. Lucid in his technical explanations, he stays with the scene as the numerous JPL teams beam computer directions to the instrument-loaded Voyager, fretting over problems and near-disaster situations during the mission, right up to the climactic ``encounter'' that revealed 10 Uranian moons hitherto unknown along with other awesome and baffling discoveries.
