Skyscraper Going Up!: Vicki Cobb
Vicki Cobb. T.Y. Crowell Junior Books, $14.95 (22pp) ISBN 978-0-690-04525-3
It is fitting that one of the modern wonders of the world should finally find its way to the pop-up format. Cobb tells how these vertical ""towns'' are constructed, from the pouring of the foundation and driving of piles deep into the ground (like trees, tall buildings need roots so they don't blow over in the wind), to the construciton of the steel cage (the workers need a good sense of balance for that job) and finally, the addition of the ``skin panels'' that finish it off. Other books have tackled the subject of skyscrapers, but this one, with its fast-moving text packed with interesting facts and innovative paper engineering, makes clear the demands of such a structure. Readers should be cautioned to hold the final spread away from their facesthis skyscraper juts right off the page. Ages 6-10. (September)
