Soul Care: Living Filled to Fully Live

Debra Fileta. Harvest House, $17.99 trade paper (224p) ISBN 978-0-7369-8821-6

Relationship counselor Fileta (Reset) offers an energetic invitation for Christians to adopt “rhythms and practices that fuel and feed and strengthen... the deepest parts of who we are.” Contending that caring for one’s mind and body honors God, Fileta provides guidance on eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep to “give God [your] best for the next day” (“Remember, Jesus took naps”); connecting with others in a faith-centered community by “initiating friendships, extending invitations, [and] practicing vulnerability”; and practicing gratitude and mindfulness. Much of the advice will be familiar to readers of self-help, and the suggestions can be oversimplified (“Look for God-created whole foods of every color”; “Be in tune with your body and when it needs to be filled”). Despite those flaws, Fileta persuasively reassures readers that caring for one’s body and mind can be holy, offering a valuable correction to the idea that religious devotion stems from self-sacrifice. Christians will find plenty of inspiration here. (Sept.)
