Vegan for Her: The Women’s Guide to Being Healthy and Fit on a Plant-Based Diet
Virginia Messina, with JL Fields. Da Capo/Lifelong, $16.99 trade paper (384p) ISBN 978-0-7382-1671-3
This comprehensive, text-heavy vegan guide for women is divided into three parts: “Going Vegan,” “Healthy Eating for All The Times of a Woman’s Life,” and “Lifelong Health for Vegan Women.” Sections on pregnancy, aging, cancer prevention, and guidance for vegan athletes are among the specialized chapters, allowing readers to pick-and-choose what’s applicable to their needs. A nonpreachy and encouraging tone permeates this title. Messina (blogger and coauthor of Vegan for Life), along with Fields (a life coach and blogger), provides lifestyle tips and breaks down research and studies into accessible, easy-to-understand language, supporting advice with concrete findings. A collection of 50 recipes for new and experienced vegan cooks covers breakfast, with selections such as smoothies, porridge, and casseroles; lunch options such as salads and soups; and dinner entrees, as well as a sampling of desserts. Selections such as the easy tofu pumpkin soup, Asian crockpot chili, and black-eyed pea and collard green pizza are interesting and hearty enough to tempt even hardcore carnivores. A lack of photos and basic design keeps the book’s look modest, but it’s a strong choice for women who follow, or want to follow, a plant-based diet. Agent: Angela Miller, Miller Agency.(Aug.)
