Veiled Threat: A Falcone & Driscoll Investigation

Alice Loweecey. Midnight Ink (www.midnightinkbooks.com), $14.99 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-0-7387-2640-3

In Loweecey’s absorbing third mystery featuring Giulia Falcone of Pittsburgh’s Driscoll Investigations (after 2012’s Back in the Habit), former nun Giulia looks into the kidnapping of the adopted baby girl of lesbian partners Laurel and Anya Drury after the Cottonwood, Pa., police are initially unhelpful. Laurel explains that kidnapping infants adopted by lesbians is not an isolated incident in the region. With the aid of Cottonwood’s police chief, James Reilly, they identify a common denominator among the victims—the Wildflower resort. Reilly asks Giulia to go undercover at the resort, which caters to a lesbian clientele. Posing as a housekeeper, Giulia finds plenty of possible suspects among the male and female staff. Loweecey nicely balances humor built around Giulia’s re-entry into the world and her attraction to her boss with her suspenseful efforts to save Laurel and Anya’s baby. Agent: Kent D.
