Who needs turducken when you can have churkey or ride a squorse? The pages of this spiralbound book are split horizontally, letting readers mix and match the top and bottom halves of 11 barnyard animals as they see fit, exquisite corpse–style. Brief rhymed verses pair with each animal half, which means that the fleece of a half-sheep, half-dog shog is “used to make warm wool,” but at nighttime, “if a sneaky fox slinks in,/ I chase him right away!” Working in ink and watercolor, Scheffler creates friendly, wide-eyed animals that look ready to gallop, hop, and scurry off the page (possibly all at once).
