Siren Song
Cat Adams, Tor, $14.99 paper (384p) ISBN 978-0-7653-2495-5
Still recovering from the attack that left her neither vampire nor human in June 2010's Blood Song, professional bodyguard Celia Graves must also cope with the discovery of her siren heritage, which comes with unexplored powers, a family she knows nothing about, and yet another set of enemies. Even as she fights in court for the right to be free, insisting that she won't become a mindless killer like other vampires, she has to dive headfirst into siren politics, outwit a demon bent on revenge, and unravel a plot against the king of Rusland. When even the protagonist admits she's been reduced to reacting to a constant stream of troubles, there may be a little too much going on, but Adams deftly juggles the various story threads, maintaining a good balance of action, character development, mystery, and magic.
