What If It’s True?
Charles Martin. Thomas Nelson, $24.99 (320p) ISBN 978-0-7852-2132-6
Instead of endeavoring to prove the historical accuracy of the Bible or outlining how to defend the Christian faith, novelist Martin (The Mountain Between Us) examines how life would be different if the Bible was taken to be literally true in this meticulous work. He argues that taking the Bible literally is beneficial because it provokes a response in the reader. Martin provides examples of biblical stories that walk readers through the emotions of forgiving an enemy, repenting a sin, and sacrificing an idol such as food, pornography, or money. He begins each chapter with a story from the Bible and adds details to paint a fuller picture. For example, when recounting the story of the woman caught in adultery from John, he describes a scribe “tossing a stone in the air like a baseball,” ready to condemn her, to stress the severity of God’s judgment. He also ends each chapter with a prayer. Deeply reflective and heartfelt, Martin’s book offers readers much to meditate on and provides encouragement for those who desire to follow the biblical mandate to work out their faith “with fear and trembling.” (Jan.)
