The Missing Mr. Mosley
John Greenwood. Walker & Company, $13.95 (156pp) ISBN 978-0-8027-5618-3
Inspector Mosley of Hempshaw End has just begun his annual leave when Superintendent Grimshaw gets some unsettling news from the village. A gallows is advertised for sale; an eccentric elderly woman is missing. Mosley is reported in the vicinity but is not available, and Grimshaw sends Sergeant Beamish to bring the inspector in. Next, a young woman and a little girl disappear. Other gallows turn upnot all of them for sale. Mosley leads Beamish in a game of hare and hound, while the older villagers act even more strangely than usual. Longstanding, class-related debts are settled in this third Mosley adventure (Murder, Mr. Mosley; Mosley by Moonlight). While the inspector himself is absent most of the time, the intriguing quirkiness of Greenwood's other characters more than compensates. February 17
