Peter and the Wolf (Hc)
Selina Hastings, S. Hasting. Henry Holt & Company, $12.95 (28pp) ISBN 978-0-8050-0408-3
Here is a new version of a beloved classic, based on Sergei Prokofiev's orchestral tale. Hastings's sturdy prose evokes the strangely ominous forest setting in which Peter and his bearded grandfather live, where ""on still nights the howling of the wolves rose clearly into the air.'' The action picks up as Peter bravely saves a cat and bird from the jaws of a hungry wolf whose captors arrive on its trail. Cartwright has captured the folktale's rustic flavor with images of long ago: Grandfather's cozy snow-bound cottage, the cap, tunic and breeches Peter wears, and the huntsmen with their thick boots and fur-lined cloaks. Many editions of the tale are available, but this is a handsome and lively newcomer worth noticing. All ages. (September)
