Howard and Gracie's Luncheonette
Steven Kroll. Henry Holt & Company, $0 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-8050-1305-4
In Howard and Gracie's luncheonette, the sparkling checkerboard floor and ``shiny red stools'' are an invitation to all. As the town wakes up, Howard and Gracie prepare the day's fare so that everything will be in order when the customers start pouring in. And pour in they do: at breakfast, lunch and dinner, this eatery is a beehive of frenetic activity. Luncheonette life is never dull for this hardworking pair--closing up one night, Howard says, `` `You know Gracie, I love this place.' `I love it too,' says Gracie.'' Employing varied, frequently skewed perspectives, Sours's colorful chalk drawings bristle with energy and style--though they may be somewhat sophisticated for the intended audience. Even if children do not relate to Kroll's workaday world, the variety of characters and snappy pace make for an entertaining excursion. Ages 5-8. (Apr.)
