LOOK AT THE BABY
Kelly Johnson, . . Holt, $14.95 (24pp) ISBN 978-0-8050-6522-0
Johnson, a photojournalist and greeting-card photographer, offers up her first book for children, a cute and cuddly celebration of babies. "Look at the baby," the text begins. A trio of photos shows diverse faces up close, and the word "look" is set within one of the portraits. On the next spread, the text directs readers, "Look at the baby's nose." Here, a single photo zooms in on one child's deep brown eyes and button nose; the word "nose" appears inside the picture. Fingers, toes, chin and more get equal attention, similarly labeled, in an array of skin tones. Set against solid fields of vibrant color, the text and pictures pop. Affectionately targeting toddlers' fondness for photo books and their emerging interest in naming parts of the body, this book is likely to invite repeat readings. Ages 2-up.
