TIME STOPS FOR NO MOUSE: A Hermux Tantamoq Adventure
Michael Hoeye, , read by Campbell Scott. . Listening Library, $26 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8072-0846-5
Actor Scott's understated yet riveting performance here easily draws readers into the exciting world of mouse watchmaker Hermux Tantamoq, a place created by debut novelist Hoeye in his self-published novel (now being published by Putnam). When he takes in a watch for repair from the enchanting aviatrix Linka Perflinger, Hermux becomes smitten with her. He never suspects, however, that his crush will lead him into an intriguing and dangerous mystery involving mad scientist Dr. Mennus and cosmetics magnate Tucka Mertslin. From the happy-go-lucky, somewhat persnickety Hermux to the imperious, slightly raspy sounding Tucka Mertslin, Scott creates a distinct cast of rodent characters by reading with subtle changes of tone and rhythm. The low, almost-hissing voice he gives to the dastardly Dr. Mennus is chillingly right on. Listeners will be enthralled, right up to the breathless denouement. Ages 8-up.
