""And Then Jack Said to Arnie""
Don Wade. McGraw-Hill/Contemporary, $16.95 (226pp) ISBN 978-0-8092-4054-8
This dull compendium of ``links'' tales may appeal to zealots of the game but is unlikely to captivate anyone else. Golf Digest editor Wade offers a brief encomium to each famous golfer who plays a starring role in the anecdotes that follow; virtually every person is deemed kind, considerate, gentlemanly, etc., while a very few curmudgeons are excused on the grounds of perfectionism. Only a handful of the stories about these paragons are amusing--most concern especially good or bad shots, miraculous recoveries from inevitable defeats, difficult holes which have exacted a toll on even the best golfers. There is also a flat-footed foreword by Lee Trevino, whose legendary sparkle as a golfer deserts him as a writer. (Apr.)
