Could I Keep Him?
Arnold Shapiro, Arnold Shapior. Barron's Educational Series, $12.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8120-5999-1
Timmy asks his mother if he might keep each of a succession of animals should any follow him home. Pop-ups reveal, however, that the potential pets would wreak havoc in the household. First, a pull tab shows an elephant breaking a chair when he tries to sit down. A lion proves too dangerous as he roars out of the next spread, then a giraffe breaks through the roof, a hippo hogs the bathtub and a gorilla swings from the chandelier. Finally Timmy petitions, ``If a puppy followed me home, could I keep him?'' Well, answers his relieved Mom, ``I suppose you could.'' At this, a pull tab uncovers the puppy hiding inside the clever boy's jacket. Readers will enjoy the pleasantly goofy animals and Timmy's imaginative strategy for resolving a familiar dilemma. Ages 2-5. (Oct.)
