A Year in the Sun
George Vecsey. Crown Publishers, $19.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8129-1678-2
Using 1986 as a springboard, New York Times sports columnist Vecsey here roams the landscape of sports and allied subjects. The son of two journalists writes of his New York childhood, of his own later family, of countries and cities he loves. In the realm of sports, he begins with the Orange Bowl; in between, he covers the Mets and their World Series victory, the World Cup of soccer and various events in basketball, hockey, boxing and tennis. Vecsey's anti-boxing arguments are forceful and his fondness for baseball infectious; conversely, his enthusiasm for soccer wil not stir many American readers. (Mar.)
