Work Smart, Not Hard
George Sullivan. Facts on File, $17.95 (196pp) ISBN 978-0-8160-1393-7
This self-help guide by an adjunct professor of writing at Fordham University offers suggestions on the optimal management of personal resources, opportunities and time in order to succeed on the job. The subtitle is misleading, however, since most of the advice comes from Sullivan, with the experts citedHenry Kissinger, William Proxmire, Reggie Jackson, Art Buchwald and othersproviding for the most part only a few paragraphs of reinforcement. The author's advice, though, is sound: he urges readers to cultivate enthusiasm, perseverance and pride; to set goals; to get a good education; to make a pleasing appearance; and, above all, to communicate effectively. He also has practical ideas on coping with stressful situations. (August 1)
