Unforgettable

Meryl Sawyer. Zebra, $6.5 (416pp) ISBN 978-0-8217-5564-8

As part of the Maui Search and Rescue team, Greg Braxton is in a remote area training his dog Dodger for the test he must take to be certified as a disaster dog. In the midst of his trials, Dodger discovers that a car has gone off the road and down a ravine. Miraculously, the person in the car is still alive. Greg carries what appears to be an unconscious hooker back to his campsite and discovers that her only injury seems to be a cut on the back of her head. Sensing something strange about the whole scenario, Greg is determined to get her to a hospital and be rid of her as soon as possible. Although some of the plot twists are predictable (Greg's unexpected companion hasn't a clue to her own identity), this is still one of Sawyer's best efforts. She cleverly weaves mystery with romance and manages the tough trick of keeping both tensions going until the end. (Jan.)
